Arizona gun laws: a plain-English guide for buyers

Arizona is one of the most gun-friendly states in the country, but federal law still governs a lot of what matters to pistol builders, especially frames and receivers. This guide covers buying, carrying and transporting firearms in Arizona as of September 2026. It is not legal advice; check with the Arizona Department of Public Safety or an attorney when in doubt.

Buying a gun in Arizona

Arizona has no permit to purchase, no gun registration and no state waiting period. When you buy from a licensed dealer you show a valid photo ID, complete ATF Form 4473 and pass the federal NICS background check. An Arizona concealed weapons permit can be used in place of the NICS check at the counter. Federal law sets the dealer minimum age at 18 for rifles and shotguns and 21 for handguns; handguns must be bought in your state of residence.

Frames and receivers

Under federal law the frame or receiver is the firearm, and that includes a frame or receiver kit that can readily be completed, a rule the US Supreme Court upheld in 2025. Every frame we sell is serialized and ships to a licensed dealer, who runs the background check before you take it home. Ordering online

At checkout you choose a licensed dealer near you. We ship firearms and frames there; the dealer calls you, and you complete the paperwork at the counter. Transfer fees are set by each dealer, commonly $25 to $50. See our city pages for 15 Arizona cities, one in every county.

Carry

Arizona has allowed permitless concealed carry since 2010 for adults 21 and older who can legally possess a firearm; open carry is legal for adults. The Arizona CCW permit is still valuable for travel, purchases and certain locations. Read our Arizona carry guide.

Where you cannot carry

Businesses that serve alcohol for on-site consumption can post a no-firearms sign; public establishments and events can ban carry if they provide secure storage; polling places, schools, nuclear plants and secured areas of airports are off limits. Federal buildings and post offices are off limits under federal law. Tribal lands have their own laws; check before you carry on a reservation.

In your vehicle

If you can legally possess a firearm, you may keep it in your vehicle in Arizona, loaded or unloaded. Employers generally cannot ban guns locked in a private vehicle out of sight, with some exceptions.

Magazines and rifles

Arizona has no limit on magazine capacity and no ban on semi-automatic rifles. Neighboring California and Colorado do; check the rules before you cross the state line.
